Elvis is in the Building!

This Monday, April 27, CPT Curator Kathryn Bertok discovered a crated serval in the driveway of the CPT staff parking lot. The attached note indicated that the serval's name is "Elvis", and that his family could no longer keep him. A brief medical and dietary history was also provided.

Elvis Serval peers out of his crate Tuesday morning
|
CPT staffer Amanda Byrne had spoken with a woman on the phone the previous day about whether CPT could place a friend's serval that was aggressive. The caller was given the Curator's contact information to make rescue arrangements.
A local veterinarian examined Elvis the morning he arrived. She determined that Elvis is about two years old and undernourished. He showed evidence of a collar having grown in to his skin. He has permanent scarring, likely from continuous rubbing on a cage or crate, and his hind legs are atrophied. Taken together, these findings suggest that Elvis was kept in confined quarters.
Elvis has been cleared of common infectious viruses, and now inhabits an isolated enclosure where he can serve the remainder of his quarantine period. CPT encourages those who wish to relinquish their exotic cats to request rescue through the proper arrangements to preserve the health and safety of both animals and staff.
Elvis is expected to reach a healthy weight and regain good hind leg strength in the months to come, provided no surprises arise from his blood test results. His initial quarantine and veterinary expenses are expected to be around $1,000, and CPT will continue to raise funds to support him for the rest of his life.
